What Can We Do With Fifteen Minutes?
Sometimes we don’t feel like we have enough time to accomplish everything we want to get done in a day.
I’ve been there. Actually, I’m there a lot. Because I’m in that place a lot, I’m writing this, like I write each of these letters, as much of a reminder for myself as I am writing it to you.
I’m writing this at 6:45 am. I have to shift gears at 7:00 am. I could have found a way to burn through that 15 minute gap. I could have found something to watch on Youtube or browsed Facebook or Instagram.
There is nothing wrong with any of those things. But would they have been the most productive use of my time? At this moment, probably not. Even though I use Youtube to find videos that I can use to learn or something that will be motivational or inspiring to share, it still wouldn’t be the best use of my time. I do the same on Facebook.
Sometimes, it’s just a matter of taking whatever time we have and getting to work. I could justify the Youtube or Facebook time, but there is no explanation needed when I’m doing my work.
Just like any other time frame, 15 minutes is plenty of time to show up and do our work. If we can get incredibly focused for those 15 minutes, that is, we put our heads down, and then we can accomplish more than we often realized.
Have you ever heard of Parkinson’s Law (the adage, not the terrible disease)? In essence, it states that work expands to fill the time available.
So if we have an hour to do something, it’ll take us about an hour. But if we have fifteen minutes to complete the same thing, chances are we’ll get it done in fifteen minutes.
Interesting right? But why? Well, here’s my take.
It’s all about our mindset. Fifteen minutes, in the grand scheme of things, really isn’t much time. I get that. It’s not enough time to dive in and get in the flow for super creative work.
But not everything we do needs to be that deep every single time. Sometimes, a fifteen-minute time box to write a letter to your friend is all you need. We just need to show up and do it.
Finding that flow takes a unique mix of focus and passion…a little persistence and love. To write this letter in the time I could allot, I had to cut out distractions (focus) and show up with a lot of love. I love writing these so that latter piece was easy. The former, well that’s a bit tough for me sometimes.
If we can align our minds with what we want to do, if we can truly believe that we’ll be able to produce something powerful, then nine times out of ten we will. Don’t worry about the one time that doesn’t work out. Some days are going to be a mess. When that happens, be proud you showed up to do your work and be ready to give it hell tomorrow.
Fifteen minutes is all we need to put our heads down with our hearts up and produce something that’s connected to our vision of what we want for ourselves. Fifteen minutes is all it takes to create something beautiful that keeps the momentum in your life rolling with all its might.
Fifteen minutes, really, is all we need. We just need to channel our love and our energy into whatever we’re doing.
And when we do, we’re able to lead from our head and live from our heart.
That’s a fun way to live. And it only took a moment of your time. I think that’s time well spent.
With my Love,
