The Space Between

Dear Friends,

When we have a goal, vision, or dream, there is a space between where we are and where we want to be (queue up the Dave Matthews!).

For many this gap can be a source of motivation. We have something to work toward, something to accomplish.

For others, the gap may be an overwhelming source of anxiety and discouragement as we realize how far away we are from out goals.

I've been on both sides. I know the feeling.

But today we're not going to focus on the gap between where we are and where we want to be. Instead, let's concentrate on the gap between where we are and from where we came.

As we work toward our goals, dreams, and aspirations, we slowly become the type of person necessary to achieve those things. The person we are today is very rarely the person we become when we reach our goals.

That's growth. That’s progress. That’s development. Call it what you will.

We're often so focused on the future that we rarely take the opportunity to consider how far we've come.

The person you are today is not the person you were six months ago. You've changed. You've grown. You've evolved. It's all part of the process.

This is wildly powerful because it's a stark reminder that we are making progress toward what we want. And if we look back, and we haven't been making progress then it can also be a powerful re-motivator and reminder that it's time to get back to work.

I'm all for setting big, powerful, lofty goals and working hard to get there. The journey, for me, is the best part. I don't set goals for the goals themselves but for the person I know I'll become in the process.

And when I'm feeling discouraged that I'm not making the progress that I want I need to remind myself to consider where I was even just six months ago. I don't do this nearly enough (I told you I write these Letters for myself just as much as I do for you) but when I do it's usually profoundly inspiring.

It's just as important to consider where we've come as it is to consider where we are going.

I can all but guarantee you'll be amazed at the transformation that has unfolded in your life.

With Love,

Ev

P.S. This post as inspired by this video from MindValley Vishan Lakiani which was inspired by coach Dan Sullivan. Props to both of these powerful gents.
