Stress, anxiety, fear, depression.
Ah, yes. The four horsemen of woe and suffering.
Each of these can have the power to paralyze you in your tracks.
…if you let them.
Now I get it, sometimes there may truly be something deeper, and you may need to ask for help.
Important sidebar: asking for help is one of the most powerful things you can do, not a sign of weakness. Seriously, you're not alone. We're all in this together.
But I digress.
For most of us, we start to feel these things because of one thing:
It may seem innocuous, but inaction is what fuels the four horsemen.
It’s a vicious cycle too that feeds on itself and is often why it's so challenging to break free.
We don’t want to do anything because we are stressed so we start to feel more stress because we are not or can do anything about it.
I’ve been there. I struggle with each of the four horsemen, sometimes all in one day. These are my dark cloud days.
But it's all good because I know the sky above the clouds is always sunny.
But unlike the weather where we often have to wait until the skies clear, with our lives we have the opportunity to be proactive.
Sometimes, we can do something about the four horsemen. Actually, we can always do something about it. We ALWAYS have a choice.
And in this case, all we have to do is focus on taking action.
Taking action, no matter how big or small, moves us forward, even incrementally.
The only thing worse than moving in a seemingly wrong direction is not moving at all. So as long as we’re making forward progress, little else matters.
One of the best ways to do this is to get your body moving, especially in situations of mental overwhelm.
It doesn’t matter how you move as long as you’re moving.
For me, that often looks like running. Running for me is more meditative than it is an exercise.
Others feel this way about weightlifting, dancing, surfing, team sports, yoga, gardening, cleaning, drawing, or playing an instrument
All of these things change our headspace in magical ways.
And all of these things move us forward to what we want and who we want to be.
The four horsemen will always be there. That’s cool. Let them be. And when they show up, you’ll know how to respond.
Because you’re strong, powerful, and resilient; capable of anything you can imagine.
Remember, this too shall pass. Impermanence can be a gift, and you can use it to your advantage.
