You Are Not In Control

Dear Friends,

Despite our best efforts, there is very little we’re able to truly have control over in our lives.

I feel like most of us know this but don’t always want to acknowledge it. Or at least not until it’s too late.

Now you may be thinking that this is terrible news. That not having any control in our lives means we’re powerless.

Quite the contrary. It’s believing that we have control when we don’t that leaves us vulnerable.

It’s when we acknowledge what we do have control over and what we don’t that gives us power.

Lao Tzu has been attributed to this pretty nifty quote:

Knowing others is intelligence;
knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength;
mastering yourself is true power.

I love this because it acknowledges and identifies the one thing we truly have power over - ourselves.

Our bodies and mind are our greatest assets and are the two things that we can control. Everything else outside of us is ultimately out of our control.

When we begin to accept this, something profound begins to happen.

The energy that we wasted on trying to control the uncontrolled is rerouted. It has to go somewhere.

And that somewhere is on ourselves.

When we stop trying to control the external, we’re able to spend more time developing and refining the internal.

This, in turn, makes us more powerful as we navigate through the external.

The Universe will always win. Always. But it’s he or she who is best able to adapt that can play the game the longest.

And I have to admit, I’m in it for the long game. Being alive is pretty great and I want to play in this game of life as long as possible.

So I’m not going to waste my time on what I cannot control.

Instead, I’m going to focus my energy on me. Not in a selfish way, but in a purposeful way.

I can focus my energy on Love, and on kindness, and on developing strength both physically and mentally.

I may not be able to control what happens to me in my life.

I can always choose how I show up.
I can always choose how I respond.
I can always choose my attitude in any situation.

We may not always have control, but we always have a choice.

Choose wisely :-)
