Dear Friends,

I have a secret to share with you.

Actually, it’s not much of a secret really, just something we do not talk about nearly enough.

It’s one of those thing, as important and simple as it may be, can be quite daunting when it’s time to put it into action.

Here it is:

If you want to get anything done, you have to start.

Boom. That’s all there is to it. Start.

As David J. Schwartz wrote in his book The Magic of Thinking Big, “Action must precede action. That’s the law of nature. Nothing starts itself.”

This is so obvious, right? Duh, Ev. Of course you have to start something in order to accomplish it.

As obvious as this may be, getting started is often the most challenging piece. Ever hear of a writer struggling to conquer the blank page? Ever had a call you knew you had to make but kept putting it off and putting it off. Ever find yourself paralyzed and unable to move despite all of your best intentions?

See? Not always so easy.

In order to get anything done, we have to start. We can’t just think about starting. We have to do something, anything.

Seriously, anything will do. There is no perfect place to start. Just do something.

Fear feeds off inaction.

Action cures fear.

So take action. Start today. Better yet, start now.

It doesn’t matter what it is. Think of something you’ve been putting off. What’s one thing you can do to move that peg forward?

Maybe you want to write more. Just start writing. Write anything. Even if it’s just your damn name written over and over again 100 times. The physical act of writing is action preceding itself. Watch and see what starts to come to you.

Maybe you want to read more. Stop what you’re doing and pick up the closest thing to you that you can read. it might be a damn shampoo bottle. Read it. Just start.

Maybe you want to move, exercise, or train more. Drop and give me 5 pushups. Yup, right now. I’ll even join you (yes I really took a pause from writing this to rep out a quick five).

The point I’m trying to make is there will never be a perfect time to start anything. At least not perfect in the way we want it to be. The perfect time to start, is and always will be, right now.

And it doesn’t have to be some big, grandiose effort. It’s the little things, the small changes that eventually build up into something monumental.

So get after it, my friends. Take action. Any action. You’ll be glad you did.

With Love,

Evan CookComment
