Everything Works, But Not Always As We Would Expect

Dear Friends,

We recently discussed the importance of understanding that although everything may work, not everything will work for you.

After I had finished writing, I realized there was an important caveat that we didn’t discuss.

Because here’s the thing, many times certain thing can work and will work for us…but only if we keep at it.

Often, we pivot too soon only to find ourselves chasing one opportunity after another in hopes of finally finding that thing that will work for us.

Sometimes, if something doesn’t work the first time, we have to make it work.

It very well might be the right thing, but we didn’t go about it the right way or at the right time.

I think the next logical question for you to ask would be something along the lines of “Well, Ev, that’s great and all. But how will I know?"

Fantastic question and I’ll do my best to answer it.

What it often comes down to is experience, instinct, perseverance, and awareness.

Experience because we very rarely get it right the first time. Or the second time. Or the third time. Only until we’ve put some skin in the game will we begin to collect data that allows us to see and understand what is happening and how each action fits into the picture.

Instinct because, and this builds off experience, as we start to experiment more, our unconscious mind starts to pick up on things that our conscious mind may have overlooked. The minutiae, the subtle details, may not be apparent but that “gut feeling” will begin letting us know something seems right or something is way off.

Perseverance because, well, it takes a lot of effort to show up each and every day to do your work. It can get discouraging when attempt after attempt does not prove to be fruitful. I get it. But what option do we have other than to keep learning, growing, and adapting?

And awareness because we start to see things different as we learn and grow. We learn from the experience of “I probably could have switched gears a bit sooner on that one” or “man, oh man had I stuck with that just a little bit longer I would have…” A heightened sense of awareness comes from the doing. It’s a result and byproduct of the last three components above.

The point I’m trying to make is that it is ok when our reality doesn’t ultimately line up with our expectations and that the worst thing we can do is take no action at all. That’s the only “wrong” decision. Everything else will get you closer and closer to your mark regardless of whether you stuck with it or chose to move on.

Because it’s not really the mark that matters. It never is. It’s the person that you become in the process of reaching that mark.

I’m not much of a “goal-setter” per se. I have a vision for my life and a direction I’d like to go, but SMART goals have never been my thing.

What this has allowed me to do is focus not so much on a goal but rather on the person I need to become to bring that vision to life.

It’s about the process. It’s about the journey. It’s about trying, trying, and trying again.

Instead of committing all of this time and effort up front to something that might not work out, I’m nimble, agile, and ready to pivot my strategy at a moment’s notice.

Commit to the process. Commit to the journey.

Figure out what works and do more of that.

Find out what doesn’t work and do less of that.

And don’t be afraid to take something that doesn’t appear to work, and then make it work.

Be crazy enough to think you can mold reality at your will.

After all, it has been and always will be the ones crazy enough to believe that they can change the world that actually go out and do it.
