Don't Just Talk About It, Be About It
As a writer it’s important that I, you know, write.
As a coach, it’s important that I, you know, coach.
As a healthy, happy, fit person, it’s important to, you know, do the things that healthy, happy, fit people do.
Everything I mentioned above is a label. It’s a way to describe things that we do.
Doing, while important, isn’t everything. What’s often more important is who you are being.
Ever hear the saying “Don’t talk about it, be about it.” That’s what we’re going for here.
I’m a writer, and I’m a coach. I use my words to connect and empower be it written, spoken, or in conversation.
But here’s the thing, writers don’t just write, and coaches just don’t coach. There are as many unique ways to write and coach as there are writers and coaches.
Writers and coaches, good ones at least, relentlessly pursue and study their craft. They don’t just talk about it, they ARE about it.
This is the type of writer and coach that I strive to be every single day. Some days are better than others, but I show up each and every day ready to give my best whatever that may look like.
That’s the key, every day this is going to look a bit different. Finding a way to be a writer and a coach that works for me and my life is the name of my game.
The same goes for you in your pursuit of becoming a healthy, happy, fit person. What this looks like to you is going to be different, even if only slightly, than what it looks like for me.
You have to pursue and study your craft relentlessly. You have to relentlessly play, experiment, and explore what BEING a healthy, happy, fit person looks like for you.
Nothing exists in isolation. Nothing. Yet we often try to separate our personal and professional lives. The work I do as a writer and a coach (and as a Scrum Master) isn’t just my professional craft, it’s my personal craft as well.
Becoming a better writer, coach, and Scrum Master is going to help me become a better partner to Katie, a better father to our daughter, and a better friend to those that love and support me. It’s going to help me become that healthy, happy, fit person I keep mentioning.
I can’t just talk about it. I have to be about it. Every day, I have to adjust and adapt, so that who I am being what those around me need the most.
Just for today, I want you to see if you can look at your health and fitness not as something you do but as something that you are.
If you want to be a healthy, happy, fit person, don’t just do the things that healthy, happy, fit people do, become one.
Don’t just talk about it, be about it.
